EPCOR Utilities Inc., formerly known as Edmonton Power Corporation, is a utility company headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. Established in 1996, EPCOR has a rich history dating back to the formation of the Edmonton Electric Lighting and Power Company in 1891. The company operates in multiple Canadian provinces, including Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, as well as several American states, including Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

As a municipally owned corporation, EPCOR is solely owned by the City of Edmonton, which serves as its shareholder. The company’s services encompass the management of water, wastewater, natural gas, and electricity distribution systems across its operational regions. Additionally, EPCOR provides engineering support for traffic signals and street lights within Edmonton and other Alberta cities.

In 2001, the company rebranded as EPCOR, derived from its original name, Edmonton Power Corporation, as authorized by City of Edmonton Bylaw 11071. EPCOR’s commitment to excellence has been recognized through various awards and accolades, including being named one of “Canada’s Top 100 Employers” by Mediacorp Canada Inc. in October 2008. It has also been recognized as one of Alberta’s Top Employers and one of Canada’s Top 10 Earth Friendly Employers in the same year.

EPCOR’s strategic initiatives have included divesting its power generating assets in Alberta in 2009, leading to the creation of a publicly traded company, Capital Power Corporation. Furthermore, the company expanded its operations in the United States through the acquisition of Chaparral City Water Company from American States Water and the Arizona and New Mexico operations of American Water in 2011.

With its extensive history, commitment to sustainability, and diverse portfolio of utility services, EPCOR continues to play a vital role in meeting the infrastructure needs of communities across Canada and the United States.
